A DIY eye pillow is a small rectangular fabric bag filled with something light and conforming, usually flaxseed or rice, often scented with dried lavender. The gentle, even weight rests over the eyes and brow, the slight pressure encouraging relaxation, while the flax moulds to the contours of the face. People use them for rest, for tension headaches, and at the end of a yoga session. You can warm it briefly or chill it for a cooling version. The whole thing takes fifteen minutes to sew and costs almost nothing.

Flaxseed is the filling of choice here for good reason. It is heavier and finer than rice, so it gives a smooth, even weight that conforms closely to the face rather than the lumpier feel of larger grains. A removable outer cover is the upgrade worth making, because the inner pillow itself should never be washed, the flax would rot, so a slip-off cover keeps it clean and lets you launder just the outer layer.
