What it is
A magnet only needs a steel surface and a steel lid to do its job, and that simple fact is the whole basis of a magnetic spice rack: small jars with metal lids, or magnets stuck to their bases, clinging to a steel sheet on the wall or the side of the fridge, turning a jumble of spice jars into a tidy, visible display.
A magnetic spice rack is a wall-mounted or fridge-mounted storage system where spices live in small magnetic containers stuck to a metal surface. You either buy or repurpose small jars, often with clear lids so you can see the contents from above, attach a magnet to each, and mount a steel plate, a magnetic knife strip, or simply use the side of a steel fridge as the surface. It frees up drawer and cupboard space and puts every spice in view at a glance, which is the practical appeal.
The materials need a little thought to work well and safely. The container needs a strong enough magnet to hold a full jar reliably, since a weak magnet drops a jar of paprika across the worktop, and the mounting surface must be genuinely magnetic, as many modern fridges and stainless surfaces are not ferromagnetic and a magnet simply slides off. The other consideration is light and heat: spices keep their flavour best in cool, dark conditions, so a magnetic rack in direct sunlight or right beside the hob looks great but dulls the spices faster than a closed drawer would. Clear-topped jars solve the visibility problem but expose the contents to light, so a rack on a shaded wall away from the cooker is the sweet spot between looking good and keeping spices fresh.
How it works
Test the mounting surface with a magnet before buying a single thing, because not all stainless steel is magnetic and many modern fridges and worktop splashbacks are not ferromagnetic at all. A fridge magnet that slides off tells you instantly that you need to mount a separate steel sheet or a magnetic knife strip rather than relying on the appliance itself.
Match the magnet strength to a full jar, not an empty one. Small jars of spice are surprisingly heavy once filled, and a weak magnet that holds an empty tin will let a full jar of paprika peel off the wall and shower the worktop, so neodymium magnets, the strong rare-earth type, are what actually hold the weight reliably. Stick one to each jar base or use jars with magnetic lids.

FAQs
A steel sheet or strip on the wall, since magnets need steel, not just any metal. I mounted a thin galvanised steel sheet (cut to size at a hardware shop) onto the wall, and the magnetic jars cling straight to it. A steel utensil rail or even the side of a steel fridge works too. Aluminium and stainless steel are often not magnetic, so test with a magnet before buying.
Either jars with steel lids stuck to the sheet, or small magnets glued to the jar bases. I use small jars with steel lids and stick strong neodymium magnets inside the lids, which hold a full jar of spice securely upside down. Cheap ferrite magnets are too weak and the jars slide or drop, so the magnet strength is the part worth not skimping on.
They can, if the wall gets sun or sits above the hob. Light and heat degrade spices, so I mounted my rack on a wall away from the window and the cooker, inside a cupboard door for the most light-sensitive ones. In a dark or shaded spot it is fine. The convenience is worth it as long as you keep the jars out of direct sun and steam.
Worth it if your problem is space and visibility, less so if you have plenty of drawer room. The magnetic rack gets every spice visible at a glance and frees up drawer and shelf space, which is brilliant in a small kitchen. The trade-off is the light exposure and the upfront effort of mounting the steel. For a cramped kitchen, it is one of the best space wins going.
